Organising your backups

Define what to copy, where to store it and how to restore it.

01

Identify important data

List files, databases, configurations and secrets. Set backup frequency based on the rate of change and the data loss your business can tolerate.

02

Separate backups from production

A copy on the same server is not an independent backup. Check what your plan actually includes: frequency, retention, location and restoration terms.

03

Test restoration

A backup must be readable. Test restoration in a separate environment, document the steps and protect access to copies.
